The Town of Wellfleet for Couples

The town of Wellfleet is perhaps most famous for its oysters and is bordered by the Altantic Ocean on one side and the calm waters of Cape Cod Bay on the other.

Town of Wellfleet Cape Cod

Over half the town of Wellfleet is in the National Sea Shore, which protects it from development, so when you are in the charming village, you'll be in what we call the 'true Cape Cod."

Although the crowds swell during the extended tourist season, it never feels overrun with visitors.

Cultural Couples

Known as "The Gallery Town" Wellfleet offers plenty for art-lovers to explore. The Central Village, just off Route 6, is home to several galleries, as well as restaurants, retail shops and B&B's. Find a parking spot and explore the Village by foot.

Besides the galleries, there is the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, which has recently opened its newest venue, the Julie Harris Stage. For 25 years W.H.A.T has been staging some of Cape Cod's most cutting-edge theatrical productions and, according to no less an authority than the New York Times has brought "a new vigor for theater on the Cape".

Where to Eat in the Town of Wellfleet

Mac's Seafood Wellfleet Cape Cod

The best clam shack on Cape Cod is undoubtedly Mac's Seafood. It's right on the Wellfleet Town Pier and serves the best clam rolls on the Cape. There is nowhere near enough outdoor seating for such a popular place, though, so be prepared to either sit in the car or eat while strolling along the pier.

Also close to the pier is Pearl, which has a roof top deck that overlooks the Wellfleet Pier and offers terrific views of Duck Creek. It also has a great raw bar complete with the ubiquitous and world famous Wellfleet oysters (you really should ask one for its autograph before you slurp it down).

PB Boulangerie Wellfleet Cape Cod One of our favorite stops on the Cape Cod Rail Trail is P.B Boulangerie, named for chefs and co-owners Philippe Rispoli, and Daniel Boulud. You really do have to cycle to the very end to reach it, but it's well worth the effort. Not only do they offer one of the finest dining experiences on Cape Cod in the evenings but their pastries and baked goods, which are sold throughout the day, are to die for.

Active Couples

If you like to hike, you simply have to take the Great Island Hike. It's a bit arduous, since much of it involves walking through soft sand, but it really is worth it if your calves are up to it.

Wellfleet is center of Cape Cod's surf scene, with Cahoon Hollow - one of our favorite beaches - offering some terrific year-round surf condintions. You have to be in pretty good shape to navigate down the steep dunes to reach the beach - and in even better shape to climb back up to the parking lot, but it's worth the trek.

Check out Sick Day Surf Shop (LOVE that name) where you can rent a board and a wetsuit (Yes, you WILL need a wetsuit) and even get some instruction, if you need it.

Party Couples

The town of Wellfleet is also home of the Cape's best oceanside bar and restaurant, The Beachcomber. Perched above the beach at Cahoon Hollow, The Beachcomber spends its days as a lunchtime retreat for the beachgoers. It has a raw bar, as well as the typical burgers and fried seafood items. Try to grab a seat outdoors at the bar if you want a more lively atmosphere. And be sure to show your parking ticket if you parked in the Beachcomber's lot. They'll subtract the $15 parking fee from your bill.

The crowd is mixed during the day with singles, couples and some families but the limited parking and steep access deter the youngest and the oldest from exploring this glorious beach. It is after dark, though, that the Beachcomber becomes a haven for party couples. It has live bands throughout the summer performing everything from reggae to rock, and is definitely one of the more happening places on Cape Cod.

Events in the Town of Wellfleet

One not-to-miss event held the weekend following Columbus Day is the Wellfleet OysterFest, which features the famous Wellfleet Oysters and showcases shellfish of all kinds. It's a must for even non oyster lovers since it is jam packed with artisans, cooking demonstrations, shucking competitions and samplings from local restaurants.
